Saddle Mountain Hike

Join us for a hike to the top of Saddle Mountain in the Oregon Cascade Range.  Saddle Mountain State Natural Area is cherished for its hiking trails, wildflowers and breathtaking scenery.  From a mature forest setting with a variety of habitats; to fields of grassy open areas filled with wildflowers; to an open rocky summit; words cannot describe the beauty and wonder experienced on the trail.  If the trail’s natural beauty and wildflowers aren’t enough to entice you to the top, the panoramic view from the 3,283-foot summit will.  On a clear day you can see the sweep of the Columbia River as it enters the sea, miles of Pacific shoreline- and on the eastern horizon, the Cascade Mountains in Oregon and Washington.

The main trail is steep and difficult in spots, with a 1603 feet rise in elevation over 2.5 miles.  It is recommended for experienced hikers wearing proper footwear and clothing.  Weather conditions can change rapidly, bringing wind and rain year round and snow in winter.  Portions of the trail can be slick in wet conditions.  The challenge this popular trail provides is well worth the reward.

We recommend bringing the following items on this hike:

  1. Raingear and a thermal layer. This is Oregon and the weather conditions can change at any time.
  2. A small backpack with a full water bladder or water bottle.
  3. Sunscreen and bug spray, you just never know when either will come in handy.
  4. Good hiking boots.
  5. Trekking poles can be helpful. It will give added stability and your knees will thank you.
  6. A good camera.  The views along the way are exceptionally nice and the view from the top is amazing.

Dog Star Adventure Tours will take care of the rest of the gear. We will also provide lunch.  Please let us know if you have specific dietary restrictions or allergies.
